What Should I Pack for My Surgery Trip?

Use this list to prepare for your visit. Whether you are staying overnight at a nearby hotel or driving in for a same-day procedure, having these items on hand will help ensure a smooth, comfortable experience.

  • Personal documents. Bring your photo ID and insurance cards.
  • Entertainment. A portable tablet or reading material for recovering in your hotel room.
  • Phone, charger, and extension cords. Don't forget all the chargers you need for your electronic devices.
  • Medications. Bring your daily prescription medications and any medications you take on occasion if you are staying in a hotel.
  • Lip balm or Chapstick.
  • Nail polish remover. Remove artificial nails and nail polish from each middle finger and both big toes, and trim nails to less than ¼ inch in length. A bare, natural nail bed allows the anesthesiologist to accurately measure your oxygen level during surgery.
  • Wet wipes. Very practical for keeping clean and fresh with every restroom visit.
  • CPAP machine or other medical equipment. If you have sleep apnea, bring your sleep apnea machine for use in the recovery room and in your hotel.
  • Glasses, case, and contacts. If you wear glasses, bring your protective case. If you wear contacts, you cannot wear them the day of surgery — bring your glasses instead. For after surgery, bring your contact lens case and cleaning supplies.
  • Water bottle or travel mug. You will be on fluids the day before and after surgery, so keep a water bottle within easy reach to stay hydrated.
  • Earplugs. If staying in a hotel, unfamiliar noises can disrupt sleep during recovery.
  • Comfortable underwear and socks. Non-wired bras and warm socks are good choices.
  • Comfortable clothes and pajamas. Loose pants and oversized t-shirts are recommended.
  • Slip-on shoes. Choose shoes that are easy to put on and take off and that keep your foot supported to help avoid slips and falls.
  • Toiletries. Toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, hair brush, hair ties, and any other personal hygiene supplies you need. Important: Use Lever 2000, Dial, or Safeguard antibacterial soap when showering before surgery.
  • Your favorite pillow. If you have a go-to pillow, consider bringing it for your hotel room stay.
