Umbilical Hernia Repair

Umbilical Hernia in Babies

Umbilical hernias can occur in children and babies under 6-months-old. This happens when their intestines bulge through their abdominal wall near the umbilical cord or bellybutton. If you notice a bulge in or near your child’s navel, especially when he/she is crying, it may indicate that an umbilical hernia repair is needed. An umbilical hernia is the only kind that often goes away on its own, typically by the time the child is 1. If the hernia has not gone away by this point, surgery may be indicated to correct it.

Pregnancy-Related Hernia

Umbilical hernias are also common in women during or after pregnancy.

Umbilical Hernias Can Return

Sometimes umbilical hernias return even after they are repaired. Because of weak abdominal walls and multiple surgery sites, some may experience several types of hernias.
