Who is Bariatric Surgery For?

Bariatric surgery might be a good option if:

  • You are between 18 and 65 years old.
  • You weigh at least 60 pounds more than your ideal body weight.
  • You are morbidly obese, with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher. Or, you have a BMI over 35 with serious health problems like high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart disease, sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes, osteoarthritis, or acid reflux.
  • The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has also approved the LAP BAND® System surgery for those with a BMI of at least 30 with a serious health condition related to obesity.
  • You have tried many times to lose weight through diet and exercise without success.
  • You do not struggle with drug or alcohol dependence.
  • You do not have any medical or psychological conditions that could complicate the surgery.
